I just bought an 88 Savage with 30 000 km on it that ran fine but had a rattling sound that made me worry too much to ride it like that. I'm no gearhead, so I took it into a motorcycle shop, and it turns out that there was some sort of chain inside that was all chewed up and had to be replaced -no big deal, cost-wise.
But you never know. When the (experienced) mechanic heard the noise before checking it out, he said it could be anything from valves to camshaft problems.
